As part of Africa Oyé’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, Cameroonian singer-songwriter Blick Bassy will perform with his three-piece band at LiverpoolPhilharmonic on Saturday 25 November, in association with Mellowtone.
Following the acclaimed release of Akö – an idiosyncratic yet infectiously catchy blend of guitar, banjo, cello, trombone and the artist’s soulful voice – Blick Bassy returns to Liverpool.
Akö, which received major acclaim in France, has been praised by the likes of The Guardian, The Observer, London Evening Standard and Songlines Magazine. And, as well as being played by Lauren Laverne, Gideon Coe and Cerys Matthews on 6 Music and by Max Reinhardt and Mary Anne Kennedy on BBC Radio 3, Blick’s music was chosen by Apple for a worldwide ad campaign.
Written and sung by Blick Bassy – in Bassa, one of some 260 spoken languages in Cameroon – and accompanied by a unique ensemble of guitar, banjo, cello and trombone – Akö’s eleven sparklingly original tracks are a musical revelation. By chance, the studio they hired to record the album was directly below the offices of Nø Førmat!, the innovative French label run by Laurent Bizot, who happened to hear the results of this unlikely yet inspired musical alchemy.
As Laurent relates,
“when I heard the first song Aké, I was stunned. It sounded like a dream, so light, a voice floating in the sky. Production was minimal but bold and the music had a feel not often heard with African songwriters. The lack of budget, the time restraints and the restriction to three musicians has conjured something entirely unique and very fresh.”
The show in Liverpool is part of Africa Oyé’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, which also sees Kanda Bongo Man (7th Oct) and Omar Sosa & Seckou Keita (15th Nov) play the Philharmonic this Autumn.

South African wildlife rangers are searching for four male lions that escaped from a national park.
The lions escaped from Kruger National Park on Sunday night and were last seen in the village of Matsulu
“KNP Rangers and their counterparts at the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) are in the area searching for the lions and we will give details as soon as they have appraised us,” KNP spokesperson William Mabasa said in the statement.
“SANParks would like to reiterate that residents should be extra vigilant and report any sightings of these dangerous predators to the authorities.”
The latest escape comes after five lions broke out of the same park in May. Four of them were caught but the fifth is still unaccounted for.
Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna made their tumultuous romantic life public again on Wednesday, as the reality star posted sexually explicit images of the mother of his child as he accused her of cheating on him with multiple men.
The 30-year-old younger brother of Kim Kardashian shocked his followers by sharing an image of his on-again off-again girlfriend wearing no underwear on Instagram.
He claims Chyna sent him the picture on July 4 before sleeping with another man… saying ‘This is from Chyna yesterday to me.
I never been so disrespected in my life. I just bought her 250K of jewelry yesterday. This woman is so disrespectful and I don’t care,’ he wrote.
Chyna responded to the allegations on Snapchat, claiming in a now-deleted post that Rob physically abused her.
‘Rob u did all this but u beat me up and try act it never happen !!!!! U put hand on me I swear on god !!!!! On my kids but I’m supposed to be quiet because you’re a Kardashian,’
.. she wrote the above in a post that has since been deleted.
Following that post, she posted video of her showing off a diamond-encrusted watch and bracelets – presumably some of the expensive jewelry Rob claimed to have purchased for her.
Rob and Chyna were known to have a tempestuous relationship, with the pair first calling it quits in December – just weeks after the birth of their daughter Dream on November 10.
Since then, there have been alternating reports that the couple are either back together or broken up again.
They were pictured together most recently on June 18, taking Dream to Disneyland. But Chyna declared she was single earlier in the week with a post on Instagram that read: ‘single. im happy.
“I apologize often womanize /Took for my child to be born /See through a woman’s eyes /Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles /Took me too long for this song / I don’t deserve you,” he raps.
JAYZ, Muti award winnning rapper, husband and baby daddy to Queen diva Beyonce knowles,., has dropped his first album in four years – The album, which contains, in his word ‘the best song he has ever written’ is rumored to be a response to his wife’s “Lemonade” record.
The album 4:44, which was released on June 30th this year reportedly got its title from Jay waking up at 4:44 a.m. and calling his engineer, Guru, to get recording.
On the album JAY-Z basically confesses to his wife and apologizes for cheating on her [apparently].
LET’S NOT TALK TOO MUCH … Just check out the lyrics below …
[Verse 1: JAY-Z] Look, I apologize, often womanize Took for my child to be born See through a woman’s eyes Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles Took me too long for this song I don’t deserve you I harass you out in Paris “Please come back to Rome,” you make it home We talked for hours when you were on tour “Please pick up the phone, pick up the phone” Said, “Don’t embarrass me,” instead of “Be mine” That was my proposal for us to go steady That was your 21st birthday You mature faster than me, I wasn’t ready So I apologize I seen the innocence leave your eyes I still mourn this death and I apologize for all the stillborns ‘Cause I wasn’t present, your body wouldn’t accept it I apologize to all the women whom I Toyed with your emotions because I was emotionless And I apologize ’cause at your best you are love And because I fall short of what I say I’m all about Your eyes leave with the soul that your body once housed And you stare blankly into space Thinkin’ of all the time, you wasted it on all this basic shit So I apologize
[Verse 2: JAY-Z] I apologize Our love was one for the ages and I contained us And all this ratchet shit and we more expansive Not meant to cry and die alone in these mansions Or sleep with our back turned We supposed to vacay ’til our backs burn We’re supposed to laugh ’til our heart stops And then meet in a space where the dark stop And let love light the way Like the men before me, I cut off my nose to spite my face I never wanted another woman to know Something about me that you didn’t know I promised, I cried, I couldn’t hold I suck at love, I think I need a do-over I will be emotionally available if I invited you over I stew over, what if you over my shit?
[Verse 3: JAY-Z] And if my children knew, I don’t even know what I would do If they ain’t look at me the same I would prob’ly die with all the shame “You did what with who?” What good is a ménage à trois when you have a soulmate? “You risked that for Blue?” If I wasn’t a superhero in your face My heart breaks for the day I have to explain my mistakes And the mask goes away, and Santa Claus is fake And you go online and see For Blue’s tooth, the tooth fairy didn’t pay
IS THAT DEEP OR WHAT? While JAY-Z hasn’t said point blank the song is about Beyonce, the lyrics offer plenty of hints, as well as its backstory.
The rapper co-wrote the song with Karan Keeney and No I.D. so it’s possible their own experiences also influenced the lyrics.
